Saturday 24th May – Mosstrooper

Saturday saw Jon and myself (Ewan) riding the Mosstrooper 300km Audax starting at 6am from Kirkley Cycles Thorneyford farm Ponteland. The day started with a misty ride up to first control and breakfast at Muggleswick then Crawleyside Alston Heartside then down to Penrith for lunch and the sun came out. The return was up to Carlisle and then north across the border to Newcastleton where the cafe stayed open late to serve macaroni cheese. We were riding in a group with 3 from the Tyneside Vagabonds and as a group we worked hard into a head wind and the start of the rain for the final 100km run home. This took us down through Kielder to Bellingham then in heavy rain and head wind we climbed up to Otterburn and to the final check point at Elston. A welcome coal fire and tea accompanied by Gibbett cake (named after the last climb). As dusk fell the final 20 miles was a dash for home finishing at 10pm only 3 others had finished one arrived after us and when we left for the drive home 9 were still on the course (another 9 had abandoned). Mick from the Vagabonds posted his Strava for the day 192.6 miles, 14,997ft elavation, 12.53 hr. Moving time.
An epic day with a great crowd and a well organised event.
