Stockton Cycling Festival 23 – 26 June

The Stockton Cycling Festival is being held 23rd to 26th June which includes the National Championship Time Trial and Road Race.

Time Trial – 23rd June and the Road Race – 26th June.

Sunday Rides – 19th June 2016

A point by point report this week:-

1. No report for the last two weeks coz I was on holiday in the lakes drinking beer and cycling.

2. Saturday, Ewan took the train to Edinburgh and then cycled home a distance of approximately 179 miles.

3. Some members of the club attended the York Cycling Rally this weekend.

4. The president took a group out today via Staindrop, Winston, Cauldwell, coffee stop at Eppleby.  Direct route home due to an early finish needed. 50 miles covered.

5. The treasurer’s group set off up Weardale with big plans of going over the passes.  Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, Stuart broke his wheel near the top of the gated road so an easy return back down Weardale was taken.  Less than 60 miles covered under the circumstances.

6. Stuart informed me that Richard Howe rode a 25mile TT in 55.50, narrowly missing out on the club record of 55.38 held by Jon Burham.

Sunday Rides – 29th May 2016

A ride out to watch Stuart Raw in the Derwentside Mountain Time Trial.  For information Stuart did the 40 miles in 2.09.44 and climbed 3842 ft.

Route out up Weardale to St Johns Chapel for a quick cake stop where we met Gary from Inspiral Cycles, on to Killhope, where we saw Stuart.  Up and over to Nenthead followed by the 25% climb over Dowgang Hush to upper Teesdale.  A continuation down the valley to Middleton In Teesdale for a coffee stop.

At the café we met Josh Quigley who was on day 4 of a round the world cycle tour to raise awareness of suicide prevention and mental health issues.  Please see Tartan Explorer.Com for more information.

Home via Middle End Farm and Folly Top.

Approximately 80 miles covered but not quite sure as my garmin failed at 66miles!

Sunday 22nd May

Most were looking for an easy ride today but Nick insisted on a ride up to Mickleton Mast.  Route out:- Folly Top, Eggleston Hall, Mickleton and the sharp ascent up to the mast.

On to Middleton for a coffee stop and various routes taken home, either via New Biggin and Middle End Farm, Bollihope or Barnard Castle.

Between 55 and 60 miles covered with between 3,000 and 4,000 feet of ascent.

Sunday Rides – 15th May

I am aware of three rides involving club members for today:-

1. Congratulations to Fiona who won two tropies at the Tyne Vags MTT.  One for Best Lady and the other for fastest lady up timed climb of Bilsmoor.   Stuart completed the course  of 47.2  miles in 2.18.55 with 4000 feet of ascent.

2. Club ride to Middleton in Teesdale with between 53 and 57 miles covered (at time of writing I am not aware of the route taken)

3. Club ride to St Johns Chapel via Stanhope with a return via Westgate, Peat Hill, Rookhope, Blanchland, Edmundbyers, Muggleswick, Cornsey and Tow Law.  70 miles covered with 5,000 feet of ascent.

Sunday Rides – 8th May

Not a good weekend for the racers.  Jon’s mountain bike race finished early with a broken freewheel and Stuart’s time trial at Stockton was cancelled due to mist and fog.

The main club ride went East via Wynyard Station and on to Seaton Carew where the misty conditions forced a quick return west into the sunshine.  Just over 60 miles covered.

Three others made a late decision for a very early start and headed West along the length of Swaledale to Kirkby Stephen and back over the tops to Middleton In Teesdale.  The usual return over Folly Top.  Just over 100 miles covered with 6,000 very warm feet of ascent.

Looking at Strava there seemed to be a number of members doing solo rides on Sunday.  If any of those wish there rides putting on the website please let me or Nikki know.

Sunday Rides – 23rd/24th April 2016

Saturday -23rd … Dave and Ewan did the  Chave Chase, 200km Audax.  Route was to Elston and the Otterburn Ranges into the cold wind and wintry showers.  After the ranges the run was good with the winds behind to Elston Café where Dave punctured, then a final climb of the Gibit and home.

Sunday 24th … Jon and Keith did the Houghton C C Reliability Ride from Lanchester.  Distance of 64 miles with 5,800 ft of ascent. Route was  to Blanchland, Allenheads, Nenthead, Stanhope, Crawleyside Bank and on to Lanchester.

Stuart and Gary competed in the Teesdale C.C. Mountain Time Trial which covered the route from Barnard Castle, over Bollihope to Stanhope, up Weardale to Eastgate, back to Stanhope and back over Bollihope to Barnard Castle.  Stuart covered the route of 40.1 miles with 4,600 feet of ascent in 2 hours l8. (Sorry Gary don’t know your time)

Other club members had a ride out towards Barnard Castle to support those doing the Time Trial.

Sunday Rides – 17th April 2016

Five set off heading towards Weardale and St Johns Chapel.  Unfortunately, due to a double puncture, two had to make a detour off route to obtain replacement inner tubes.

The five rejoined at Stanhope with 3 continuing on to St Johns Chapel for lunch.  A return over the gated road, through the snow, on to Middleton In Teesdale, Barnard Castle, Whorlton, Staindrop and home.

Head winds on the way out and a kind following wind on the way home.

65 miles covered with approximately 4,000 ft of ascent.

The 2nd group headed out towards Tow Law via Willington and Sunniside, into a headwind eventually turning to head towards Lanchester for coffee. After a hilly ride to get there it was nice to be on the flat for a while, picking up the lines towards Durham then back to the hills returning via Shincliffe, Coxhoe, Metal Bridge and Ferryhill – with approx 50 hilly miles done.

Sunday Rides – 10th April

One of todays rides took in the short but steep hills of lower Teesdale.

Route out – Woodland, Eggleston, Mickleton Mast, moorland road to brownberry plantation, Grassholme and Middleton In Teesdale for coffee stop.

A continuation up Teesdale to Newbiggin, steep hill to the moorland road to Middle Side and around the old lead mines at Hudleshope Beck.  On to Middle End Farm, Eggleston and Woodland.

65 miles covered with 5,500 feet of ascent.

The 2nd group took the flatter option heading to Kirklevington via Bishopton, Stockton and Ingleby Barwick, returning via Middleton St George and Sadberge – approx 60 miles.

Club Time Trial – 17th April

Due to road works and subsidence on the Woodland Road, the above event has had to be cancelled.
